Final Chap 16 Flashcards
What terms does Selye use to describe good and bad stress?
Eustress (good) and distress (bad)
What is the Yerkes-Dodson law?
There is an inverted U shape curve between stress and performance, there is a stress sweet spot
What is the maximal adaptability model?
humans can maintain high levels of performance even when under stress
What is the Stress and Coping theory?
The outcome of stress is determined by the demands of a stressor and the resources available to deal with it
What are the three types of stressors?
Acute, chronic, and traumatic
What is the homeostasis theory of stress?
Stress response is a combination of alerts that we are stressed and reactions to restore the balance
What are the alerts to stress?
Thoughts/emotions/sensations
What activates in the body in response to stress?
The ANS and the HPA axis
What hormones do the adrenal glands secrete in response to SNS activation?
Catecholamines (epinephrine/norepinephrine)
Describe the HPA axis
The hypothalamus secretes CRH(corticotropin releasing hormone) to the pituitary, which releases ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) to the adrenal glands, which release cortisol
What kinds of stresses lead to the strongest cortisol responses?
uncontrollable/ socially evaluative acute stressors
What happens to cortisol responses in response to chronic stress?
It becomes flatter, less is released in the morning and it declines slower
What happens to fatty acids in the presence of cortisol in the body?
They are converted to glucose
What is the freeze response?
People or animals will become overwhelmed and become immobile and unresponsive
How is the HPA axis regulated?
Cortisol has as negative feedback effect on CRH and ACTH release
Are acute or chronic stressors worse for the body?
Chronic
What model considers that some are resilient to stress, and some are more vulnerable to adverse health effects?
The diathesis-stress model
What DNA complex structure is correlated with biological aging the most?
The telomere
Why is inflammation a good thing in aging?
It keep telomeres lengthened
What is the correlate between stress and aging?
More stressed people had shorter telomeres
Which women in the telomere study were correlated to have shorter telomeres?
Mothers with chronically ill children who they had been caregiving for for a longer time
