What are attitudes?
Feelings that can predispose us to acting in certain ways
What are the 3 main types of antisocial ideas?
- Stereotypes
- Prejudice
- Discrimination
Are stereotypes always negative?
No, they can be positive or negative
Is prejudice negative?
Yes it is inherently negative
What is discrimination?
It is an action based on prejudice, it is the external component of attitude
What component of attitude does prejudice represent?
The internal component
What are the components of prejudice?
beliefs and emotions
What trends do explicit/implicit prejudice in NA follow?
Explicit has decreased over time, implicit prejudice still remains
What is an ingroup?
A social group one identifies as
What is the tendency for outgroups?
Antagonism and lack of support for the outgroup
What is the robber cave study and what does it outline?
Random groups with the same ethnicities were made to compete against each other, and conflict with limited resources between the groups increased and caused prejudice. Once limited resources were stopped, the groups came back together
What is altruism?
It is an unselfish concern for the welfare of others
What are the 2 norms for helping?
- We are socially expected to help
- Reciprocity norm (reciprocal altruism) - expecting something in return
What is prejudice?
It is the predisposition to behave discriminatorally
What is prosocial behaviour?
It is action to help others
