Female Reproductive System Flashcards
Ovary - Cortex
the outer portion of the ovary. The ovarian follicles are located within the ovarian cortex

Ovary - Medulla
a highly vascular stroma in the center of the ovary. It forms from embryonic mesenchyme and contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, and nerves.

Ovary - Hilum
site where the broad ligament contacts the ovary and is the entry point for blood vessels. The hilus is composed of fibroconnective tissue and has two components: hilar cells and the rete ovarii.

Ovary (histo) - Primary follicle

Ovary (histo) - Secondary follicle
white circle in middle is primary oocyte
Where is the primary oocyte?

Ovary (histo) - Vesicular follicle
antrum located at line on upper left corner
mature follicle but same as vesicular follicle?
antrum?

Ovary (histo) - corpus luteum

Ovary (histo) - tunica albuginea

Which structures of the ovary release which hormones?
Suspensory ligament
one continuous tissue that connects the ovary to the wall of the pelvis

Ovarian ligament
a fibrous ligament that connects the ovary to the lateral surface of the uterus

Uterine tube - Fimbriae
small, fingerlike projections at the end of the fallopian tubes, through which eggs move from the ovaries to the uterus. The fimbriae are connected to the ovary.

Uterine tube - Infundibulum
beginning of the uterine tube, just after the abdominal ostium of uterine tube, and is in relation to the free border and medial surface of the ovary.

Uterine tube - Ampulla
widest section of the uterine tubes. Fertilization usually occurs here

Uterine tube - Isthmus
narrow section of the uterine tubes connecting the ampulla to the uterine cavity.

The mucosa is lined by a ciliated columnar epithelium with secretory cells, and is folded out into the lumen so that an ovum in the lumen will always be close to the cilia for transport to the uterus
What tissue type lines the lumen of the uterine tube?
Vesicouterine pouch
close to the anterior fornix of the vagina. It is formed from the peritoneum over the rectum and bladder, covering the intestinal surface and fundus of the uterus onto its vesical surface.

Rectal-uterine pouch
an extension of peritoneum between the posterior wall of uterus and the rectum in females. It is the most dependent part of the peritoneal cavity and is analogous to the rectovesical pouch in males.

Uterus - Fundus
the top portion, opposite from the cervix

Uterus - Body
above the isthmus is termed the body, and that below, the cervix

Uterus - Perimetrium (visceral peritoneum)
the outer serosa layer of the uterus, equivalent to peritoneum. It is embrionically derived from visceral peritoneum. The perimetrium consists of superficial mesothelium, and a thin layer of loose connective tissue beneath it.

Uterus - Myometrium
smooth muscle tissue of uterus

Uterus - Endometrium
the mucous membrane lining the uterus, which thickens during the menstrual cycle in preparation for possible implantation of an embryo.

Uterus (histo) - proliferative phase

Uterus (histo) - secretory phase

Uterus (histo)
know labeling and identify two different layers of endometrium

Cervix - internal os
The opening into the uterus

Cervix - cervical canal
the narrow passage which runs through the cervix, which is what connects the vagina to the uterus. It is the lowermost part of the uterus and is consists of strong muscles.

Cervix - external os
the opening of the uterine cervix into the vagina.

Vagina - rugae
structures of the vagina that are transverse ridges formed out of the supporting tissues and vaginal epithelium in females.

Vagina - mucosa
Mucosal membrane, lining the vaginal lumen including a stratified squamous epithelium.

Vagina - muscularis
two indistinct smooth muscle layers, an outer longitudinal layer and an inner circular one

Vagina - adventitia
inner layer of dense connective tissue with numerous elastic fibers and outer layer of loose connective tissue with blood and lymphatic vessels, nerves and nerve sensory endings.

Mons pubis
the rounded mass of fatty tissue lying over the joint of the pubic bones, in women typically more prominent and also called the mons Veneris.

Vulva (external genitalia) - labia majora
a pair of rounded folds of skin and adipose that are part of the external female genitalia. Their function is to cover and protect the inner, more delicate and sensitive structures of the vulva

Vulva - labia minora
a pair of thin cutaneous folds that form part of the vulva, or external female genitalia. They function as protective structures that surround the clitoris, urinary orifice, and vaginal orifice

Vulva - vestibule
a part of the vulva between the labia minora into which the urinary meatus (urethral opening) and the vaginal opening open

Vulva - clitoris
a small, sensitive, erectile part of the female genitals at the anterior end of the vulva.

Vulva - external urethral orifice
the external opening of the urethra, from which urine is ejected during urination

Vulva - external vaginal orifice
opening of the vaginal canal
