Female Reproductive Flashcards
Site of fertilization
Uterine tubes
Site of fetal development
Uterus
Uterus walls
Perimetrium
Myometrium
Endometrium
Perimetrium
Outer layer of the uterus
Myometrium
Middle muscle layer of the uterus
Contracts
Endometrium
And sub layers
Inner layer
Highly vascularized
Two layers
- stratum functionalis
- stratum basalis
Stratum functionalis of the endometrium
Closer to the cavity
Shed during menstruation
Stratum basalis of the endometrium
Permanent layer
Builds the functional layer
Uterus parts
Fundus- superior
Body- central
Cervix- inferior
• internal os- opens to the uterus
• external os- opens to the vagina
Flow of milk
Loves
Lactiferous glands
Lactiferous sinus
Nipple
Oogenesis
Oogonia
Primary oocyte
Secondary oocyte
Oogonia (2n)
Before a girl is born germ cells differentiate into Oogonia
Some differentiate into primary oocytes
Primary oocyte (2n)
Starts meiosis 1 but does not complete
At puberty anterior pituitary secretes FSH to stimulate maturation of follicles
The primary oocyte completes meiosis 1 to produce secondary oocyte and polar body
Secondary oocyte (1n)
Starts meiosis 2 and then stops
Secondary oocyte with no ovulation
Oocyte dies
Secondary oocyte with ovulation
Completes meiosis 2 after penetration to create another polar body and the ovum
The sperm and ovum fuse to become a zygote
Follicular development
Primordial follicle
Primary follicle
Secondary follicle
Mature follicle
Primordial follicle
Primary oocyte is surrounded by single layer of follicular cells
Primary follicle
A larger oocyte is surrounded by a single layer of follicular cells
Secondary follicle
A larger oocyte is surrounded by stratified follicular cells (granulosa cells)
Mature follicle
The follicle is fluid filled with the oocyte pushed to one side
