Extracellular Matrix Flashcards
1
Q
What is an Extracellular Matrix?
A
- It’s a structure outside the cell but made inside the cell
- Holds cells into tissue
- Comes in different types
2
Q
What are Metazoans?
A
- Multicelluar animals
- Their cells are often organized into tissues
3
Q
What are Tissues?
A
-Groups of cells with a similar function
4
Q
What does the Extracellular Matrix Consist of?
A
-Proteins & complex carbs made inside the cell & then transported outside the cell via Exocytosis
5
Q
What types of Extracellular Matrix are there?
A
- Somes that have LOTS OF CELLS embedded in it & LITTLE bits of ECM
- Or other types that have FEW CELLS w/ ALOT of ECM (connective tissue)
6
Q
What is Connective Tissue?
A
- A fibrious band of ECM that has few cells
- An example is Ligament bc it holds bones together at the joints (ACL)
7
Q
What is Basil Lamina?
A
- AKA basement membrane
- Special type of ECM that it organized into thin sheets
- Secreted from Basil Surface (opposite side of the lumen)
8
Q
What is the function of the Basil Lamina?
A
- Separates epithelial cells from the rest of the body
- Determines the orientation of epithelial cells which makes them polar
9
Q
What is an example of cell specialization?
A
-Basal Surface is different from apical surface (next to lumen)
