Bulk Movement (94Q) Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 2 ways that bulk movement can occur?
A
- Endocytosis
- Exocytosis
2
Q
What is Endocytosis?
A
- Bulk movement INTO the cell
- There’s 3 different kinds of endocytosis
3
Q
What is the mechanism for Endocytosis?
A
-Inward folding (invagination) of membrane gets larger & then pinches off completely= results in membrane-bound vesicle in cytoplasm
4
Q
What are the 3 different types of Endocytosis?
A
- Phagocytosis
- Pinocytosis
- Receptor-Mediated Cytosis
5
Q
What is Phagocytosis?
A
- Cell eating
- When the Cell ingests solid particles
6
Q
What is Pinocytosis?
A
- Cell drinking
- When the Cell brings in small liquid droplets
7
Q
What is Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis?
A
-When specific molecule enters the cell bc they are recognized by receptor proteins
8
Q
What is an example of Receptor-Mediated Endocytosis?
A
- When LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which carries cholesterol & other lipids in the blood is recognized by LDL receptor which removes it from the blood=keeps blood lipids low
- If LDL isn’t taken out they can accumulate in arteries blocking blood flow= heart attacks
