Exam 3 Flashcards
Type of treatment that includes patient education, nasalized phrase productions and chanting phrases such as “oh no, oh my, oh me, oh my no, oh me oh my”
Direct modification of tone focus
What are the 5 voice therapy orientations?
Hygienic, symptomatic, psychogenic, physiologic, eclectic
Which voice therapy orientation has the most efficacy and seen as EBP?
Physiologic
Concentrates on discovering the behavioral causes of the voice disorder and modification/elimination of the causes to improve vocal condition and voice quality
Hygienic voice therapy
What is one weakness about using hygienic voice therapy?
The cause may no longer be the precipitating factor (the behavior is not the cause of the voice disorder); e.g. someone with COPD; using hygienic therapy will not eliminate COPD
T/F: The combination of one or more therapy orientations come under eclectic.
True
Addresses/modification of deviant vocal symptoms such as breathiness, inappropriate pitch, loudness, hard glottal attacks; if the voice component is inappropriate, modify it
Symptomatic voice therapy
What is one weakness about using symptomatic voice therapy?
What is symptom/cause; we are addressing the behavior, not the actual cause of the voice disorder
T/F: Hygienic voice therapy strongly believes that a behavior is always a cause of voice problem, and therefore is one of its strengths.
False; the behavior may not be the cause of the disorder
Focus is on the emotional and psychosocial status of the patient that led to and maintained the voice disorder
Psychogenic voice therapy
What is one weakness about using the psychogenic voice therapy?
Psychosocial contribution may be over-stated
T/F: Psychogenic is understated because every patient needs intensive counseling.
False; This orientation is overstated because we need to address the whole problem rather than just one of the components involved in the voice disorder. Not everyone needs intensive counseling, but yes with education and importance of voice therapy.
Strives to improve the balance among voice respiratory support, laryngeal muscle strength, control and stamina, and and supraglottic modification of the laryngeal tone of the phonatory, resonatory, and respiratory system
Physiologic voice therapy
What is one weakness about using the physiological voice therapy approach?
Does not account the behavior
Combination of different voice therapy orientations to promote positive vocal change;
Eclectic voice therapy
