Exam 2 - Sensory Receptors Flashcards
What is a sensory receptor?
receptors that detect changes in thermal, mechanical or chemical stimuli applied to the surface or interior of the body
Where are somatic sensory receptors located?
skin, muscles, and tendon
What type of neurons are in somatic sensory receptors?
unipolar neurons
What is the function of the terminal end of primary sensory neurons?
- form free nerve endings
- innervates specialized cells
- encapsulated by cells or connective tissue
What is the structure of a free nerve ending?
naked axons
Where is the free nerve ending located?
in the epidermis
What is the function of the free nerve ending?
sense pain (nociceptor) Sense temperature change (thermoreceptor)
What is the structure of a hail follicle terminal?
naked axons
What is the location of the hair follicle terminal?
wraps around the hair follicle
What is the function of the hair follicle terminal?
touch- mechanoreceptor
What is the structure of a merkel’s corpuscle?
merken cell + axon terminal
What is the location of a merkel’s corpuscle?
located at the base of the epidermis
What is the function of Merkel’s corpuscle?
touch and vibration (mechanoreceptor)
Where is the Meissner’s corpuscle located?
in the dermal papilla
What is the function of the Meissner’s corpuscle?
touch and vibration less than 100 Hz (mechanoreceptor)
