Exam 2 Lecture - Nervous Tissue Flashcards
What are the three layers of the meninges?
dura mater, arachnoid, pia mater
Arachnoid + pia mater =
leptomeninges
What is the subarachnoid space?
the space between the arachnoid and pia mater
Where does the CSF circulate?
the subarachnoid space and the central canal of the spinal cord
What are some common ailments associated with the meninges?
meningitis and meningioma
What are the two components of the spinal cord?
White matter and grey matter
What structures are within the gray matter?
neurons and neuroglia
What structures are within white matter?
neuroglia
What are the two roots of the spinal cord?
the ventral root and the dorsal root
What type of neurons are in the dorsal root?
unipolar sensory
What type of neurons are in the ventral root?
multipolar motor
What are neurons?
excitable cells that generate action potential
What is the morphology of a neuron?
- Cell body (soma)
- Dendrites
- Axon
What are the parts of the soma of the cell body?
- Nucleus
- Nucleolus
- Nissl Substance
- Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
- Ribisomes
What is the structure of a unipolar neuron?
an axon with the cell body off of the main stem
What is the structure of the multipolar neuron?
a simple axon
What is the structure of a bipolar neuron?
the cell body is in the middle of the neuron with dendrites connecting to a set of branches on one side and an axon connecting to a set of branches on the other
What is the perikaryon?
the cell body
Where is the dura mater located?
the outermost layer of the meninges
Where is the arachnoid located?
the middle layer of the meninges
Where is the pia mater located?
the inner most layer of the meninges
What is the dura mater composed of?
collagen fibers, elastic fibers, fibroblasts, nerves, lymph vessels, and blood vessels
What is the arachnoid and pia mater composed of?
fibroblasts and collagen fibers
