Ethanol metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
what is the ethanol metabolism ?
A
it is a process where it is metabolised by ADH and produced into acetaldehyde.
2
Q
what are the steps of ethanol metabolism?
A
- ethanol
- acetaldehyde
- acetate.
- acetyl- CoA - fatty acid synthesis or TCA cycle
3
Q
what is the enzyme between ethanol to acetaldehyde?
A
ADH- alcohol dehydrogenase
4
Q
what is the enzyme between acetaldehyde to acetate?
A
ALDH- aldehyde dehydrogenase.
5
Q
where does the ALDH takes place?
A
mitochondria
6
Q
what is the deficiency caused by ALDH-2?
A
alcohol flush also known as asian flush syndrome.
7
Q
what is an Asian flush syndrome?
A
it is a deficiency caused by ALDH-2 enzyme which caused increased acetaldehyde which induces the release of catecholamine.
8
Q
what can happen to the acetate?
A
- it can either leave the liver and be picked by peripheral tissues or stay in the liver and either way it can be processed to acetyl- CoA.
