EOC REVIEW: Phylogeny Flashcards
What is a phylogenetic tree?
A phylogenetic tree is a diagram used to reflect evolutionary relationships among organisms or groups of organisms.
What do phylogenetic trees show?
They show evolutionary order, not time.
What are the levels of taxonomy?
Domain, Kingdoms, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species
What are the three domains of life?
Bacteria, archaea, and eukarya
What are the kingdoms of eukarya?
Protsita, fungi, plantae, and animalia
What are the characteristics of bacteria?
Prokaryotes, peptidoglycan cell wall
What are the characteristics of archaea?
Prokaryotes, cell walls with no peptidoglycan
What are the charcteristics of eukarya?
The ONES with cell walls do not have peptidoglycan; cells contain a nucleus
What are the characteristics of protista?
Single cellular; algae is an example
What are the characteristics of fungi?
Single or multi cellular; cells are not organized into tissue; absorbs nutrients, no photosynthesis
What are the characteristics of plantae?
Multicellular; cell wall; obtain nutrients by photosynthesis and absorption
What are the characteristics of animalia?
Multicellular; no cell wall; obtain nutrients by ingestion
What is a gene pool?
A gene pool is the total collection of all the genes and their different alleles within a population.
