Strategic Planning
Strategy
Involves the What and Why of a meeting, which drives the how or the planning of the meeting
Strategic Planning
The process by which an organization develops its long range plan of action.
SMART Objectives
Specific - should call out actions, results, behaviors that are to be achieved
Measurable - what element of the objective is to be measured and how
Attainable - challenging goals, yet realistic and within reach
Relevant - focused on what matters to the organization and participants
Time based - achievable by a certain time
Mission Statement
Defines the purpose of the organization. It generally remains unchanged over time
Goals
Broad and general; they are expected to be achieved over a long term horizon. Goals are used to achieve the mission
Objectives
Specific and narrow and used to achieve a goal. Objectives tie directly to evaluation measures.
Key Performance Indicator
Quantifiable measurements of critical success factors for an organization. Can be applied to events to measure how effectively goals and objectives are being met.
Sustainable (a.k.a. Green Events)
Help reduce the impact of events on the environment and can improve the financial outcomes for organizations.
APEX/ASTM Environmentally Sustainable Meeting Standards
A series of specific performance requirements often with metrics for both the planner and supplier to satisfy in 9 areas of event management:

An international process oriented management program which requires organizations to have defined systems in place to implement sustainable practices. Processes to track and record performance
GRI EOSS
An international protocol for reporting on sustainable events. It guides event organizers on what and how to report on economic, environmental and social outcomes.
Business Continuity
The ability of an organization to continue to operate during and after an emergency crisis or disaster occurs.
Contingency Planning
Addresses the ability of the event professional to execute the event as planned.
Return on Investment (ROI %)
Net monetary benefits/meeting cost x 100

Site and venue aspects such as heat, lighting and sound
