Drugs for Blood Pressure Flashcards
What are some examples of ACE inhibitors?
Captopril, Ramipril, Lisinopril
What are some side effects of ACE inhibitors?
- Dry cough due to the inhibition of bradykinin breakdown
- Sudden fall of blood pressure with the first dose
What are the affects of ACE inhibitors?
- decreased peripheral vascular resistance
- decrease aldosterone causing decrease water and sodium retention
- decrease vasoconstriction
- decease in sympathetic response
What are some examples of Angiotensin receptor blockers?
Losartan, Candesartan
What are some of the side effects of Angiotensin receptor blockers?
- headache
- dizziness
- diarrhoea
- back pain
What receptor do Angiotensin receptor blockers block?
AT1: responsible for the vasoconstriction and aldosterone release
What are some examples of Alpha-One receptor blockers?
Prazosin, Terozin, Doxazosin, Phentolomine (alpha one and two)
What are some side effects of Alpha-one receptor blockers?
- dizziness
- postural hypotension
- reflex tachycardia
What are some side effects of beta-blockers?
- vivid dream
- intolerance to exercise
- bronchonstriction
- hypotension
- hypoglycaemia
- bradycardia
What are some examples of selective beta-blockers?
Atenolol
What are some examples of non-selective beta-blockers?
Propanolol
What channels do calcium-channels blockers block?
L-type
What is the mechanism of action of open-channel calcium blockers and what are some examples?
The drugs binds to the receptor and blocks the entry. Verapamil, Diltiazem.
What is the mechanism of action of allosteric modulation and what are some examples?
These bind to the allosteric site and cause a shape change and limit opening. Examples include Nifedipine and amlodipine.
What are some side effects of Calcium-channels blockers?
- headache
- constipation
- palpations
What are some examples of diuretics?
Indapamide, Bendroflumethaizide
What is the mechanism of action of loop diuretics?
These inhibit the reabsorption go sodium, calcium and water in the Loop of Henle
What is the mechanism of action of thiazide diuretics?
These inhibit the reabsorption of sodium in the DCT
What is the mechanism of action of potassium sparing diuretics?
These inhibit the transporter in the collecting duct responsible for secreting potassium and absorbing sodium
What are some side effects of diuretics?
Hypokalaemia
Hypotension
What is the first medication given to under 55s?
ACE inhibitor (consider angiotensin inhibitor)
What is the first medication given to over 55s or black patients of any age?
Diuretic or Calcium channel blocker
