Complement Flashcards
How is the classical pathway activated?
This is activated from an antibody (IgG or IgM) coated microbial surface.
How is the lectin pathway activated?
This is activated by mannose-binding lectin complex
How is the alternative pathway activated?
This is activated by C3b coated pathogen.
What are the three pathways for complement?
Alternative
Classical
Lectin
What do the three pathways all converge at?
C3 convertase
C3 convertase will cause the activation of C3a and C5a. What affect will this have?
These are peptide mediators of inflammation through C3a receptor and C5a receptor- mediated activation of leukocytes.
C3 convertase will cause the activation of C3b, what affect does this have?
This will opsonize the pathogen. This will bind to complement receptors on the pathogen.
C3b will cause the activation or C5b, C6, C7, C8 and C9. What is the effect of this?
This will create a membrane-attack complex. This will cause lysis of pathogens and cells.
