Disorders: Homeostatic Imbalances of the bones Flashcards
What is Osteoporosis?
This is a Disorder of the bones where Bone resorption outpaces Bone Disposition. In large the body loses more calcium through excretion than absorbing it from diet.
The bones can fracture more easily.
This affects middle aged people most often as the sex hormones that inhibit Osteoblast to build bone tissue weaken. This happens in women more often than men as women have less dense bones and start to loose estrogen earlier.
What is Osteomyelitis?
This is an infection of the bone characterized by High fever, sweating, chills, pain, nausea, pus formation, edema and warmth over the affected area and ridged overlaying muscle.
This is often caused by Staph infection.
What is Osteosarcoma?
This is a Cancer of the bones Osteoblast and most often occurs in the Metphyses of the Femur and Humerus and Tibia.
This condition most often occurs in teenagers during their growth spurt.
What is Osteopenia?
This is any condition where bone synthesis is too slow to compensate for bone resorption.
Any bone with decreased mass under the normal is considered to have Osteopenia.
