Digestive system IV Flashcards
What are the circular folds of the small intestine?
plica circulares
In what layer are the gastric pits of the small intestine located?
Plica of Mucosa
A lymph nodule with germinal center found in the small intestine would be called what?
Peyer’s patch
What are the 2 components of the brush border?
Microvilli
Glycocalyx
What is the epithelial type of the small intestine?
Simple columnar with goblet cells
In what layer is the brush border found?
Tunica mucosa
What are villi?
mucosal projections in small intestine
What are the structures of the villi?
Lined with columnar absorptive cells (microvilli) and goblet cells and have a core of lamina propria with a lacteal (fat absorption) in the middle
What are the crypts of Lieberkuhn?
crypts between villi
What do goblet cells secrete?
Mucin & water (mucus)
What is the function of enteroendocrine cells? Secretin, Cholecystokinin, serotonin
Secretin: decrease intestinal motility
CCK: stimulate enzymatic, pancreatic secretion, increase intestinal motility
Serotonin: increases gut motility
What is the purpose of Paneth cells?
Antibacterial
Are Paneth cells found in dogs and cats?
No
What is the purpose of M cells?
Present in peyer’s patch to endocytose molecules from gut lumen and transport to underlying lymphatic tissue
What are Brunner’s glands?
Mucus/mixed glands present in submucosa of duodenum
Are there rugae/plica/villi present in the large intestine?
No
How to tell large intestine from small intestine?
No villi in large intestine
Thick mucosa with lots of goblet cells
Deeper crypts
What are taeniae?
Flat bands of muscle found in Large intestine of humans, pigs and horses
What are the 3 glands of the anal region?
Anal glands
Glands of the anal sacs
Glands of the circumanal region
Where are anal glands located?
Rectoanal junction
What are the glands of the anal sacs type of secretion?
Sebaceous
Apocrine
What are the 2 types of glands in the circumanal region?
Sebaceous & sweat glands
Hepatoid glands
Do the hepatoid glands do anything?
No ducts, form tumors
What is the buccal cavity in the bird?
Oral cavity
No lips or cheeks
What is the crop?
Esophageal diverticulum
What are the glands of the proventriculus (stomach)?
Rugosal glands that open to the surface
Subrugosal glands that open to surface via papillae
What is the ventriculus?
Muscular stomach
