Digestive system Flashcards
What are autotrophs?
organisms that can produce their own food from their environment
What are heterotrophs?
cannot synthesise their own food and rely on organisms for nutrients
Essential nutrients (7)
minerals, vitamins, fats, carbohydrates, fibre, water, proteins.
Function of proteins
-necessary for growth and maintenance of all body cells and tissues
-source of energy
Function of carbohydrates
supply of energy in the cells
Function of lipids (fats)
-supply and store energy
-insulate to conserve body heat
-support and cushion organs
-absorb fat-soluble vitamins
Function of vitamins
promote specific chemical reactions in the cell
Function of minerals
used for growth and maintenance of bones and teeth
Function of fibre
needed to increase bulk and water in the intestinal contents
Function of water
-Transports chemicals
-regulates temperature
-removes waste products
Herbivore’s-function of incisors
They have a dental pad. Use tongue to grasp plants and pinch it off with lower incisors against dental pad
Herbivore’s-Function of canines
absent. They have a diastema to allow for tongue movement during prolonged chewing
Herbivore’s-Function of pre-molars
Thoroughly grind plant food and mix with large amounts of saliva
Herbivore’s-Jaw movement
Movement is up and down and side to side
Herbivore’s-Eye position
eye positioned at the side for wider angle of visual field to see approaching predators
What is a birds beak made of
bone, keratin and blood vessels
What is mechanical digestion?
Where large pieces of food are ingested and physically broken down into smaller pieces
What is chemical digestion?
Where larger molecules of food are broken down into smaller molecules by enzymes, acid and bile
Carnivore-Function of incisors
allowing for gnawing at bones
