Absorption and glucose regulation Flashcards
What is homeostasis
a state of balance among all the bodies systems needed for the body to survive and function correctly
3 examples of homeostasis
blood glucose, body temperature, blood calcium levels
regulation of blood glucose
insulin regulates the level of glucose in the blood stream and controls its delivery to the body’s tissues
regulation of body temperature
insulation, such as fat fur or feathers, panting or sweating
regulation of blood calcium levels
co-ordinating the availability of calcium in the blood at the level of the bones, intestine and kidneys
what is the endocrine system
a collection of glands, called endocrine glands, which co-ordinate chemicals in the body
what is the main role of glucose in the animal body
glucose is needed by cells for respiration
function of an endocrine
secretion of hormones into the bloodstream
what is the islets of Langerhans
cell clusters in the pancreas that consist of different types of cells
islets of Langerhans contain two types of cells, what are they and what do they produce
alpha cells which produce glucagon
beta cells which produce insulin
explain type 1 diabetes
the pancreas fails to produce ANY insulin to lower blood glucose levels
explain type 2 diabetes
-common in older or obese animals
-the pancreas fails to produce ENOUGH insulin to lower the blood glucose levels
