Backup protection for COCs
if not started within 5d of period -> 7d BUC
>/= 48 hours since last dose -> 7d BUC
Backup protection for POPs
when starting POP -> 48h BUC
> 3 hours late admin -> 48h BUC

Controlled studies in animals & pregnant patients show no risk in the first trimester. Fetal harm is remote.
