Cervical position and fertility?
When fertile: cervix is high in vagina, soft and open
When less fertile: cervix is low in vagina, firm and closed
In a 28 day cycle, which days are most fertile?
days 8-18
Breast feeding method of contraception - what are the 3 criteria?
- exclusively breast feeding
- less than 6/12 post natal
- amenorrhoeic
How often do you have to re-check contraception? I.e. how often will your GP want to see you?
Annually
How does depo provera work?
Inhibits ovulation
Other effects: effect on cervical mucus, effect on endometrium
What examinations do you need to do before you can put someone on depo provera?
- check BP and BMI before the first prescription
- check smear status if relevant
- consider risk factors for osteoporosis
When can you start depo?
-can be started up to and including day 5 of the cycle WITHOUT the need for additional contraception
Side effects of depoprovera?
- Weight gain
- Delay in return of fertility
- Irregular bleeding
- Possible risk of osteoporosis
When is expulsion of IUD most likely to occur?
Most in the first 3/12
