How long should you breast feed exclusively for?
Infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health and continue up to two years of age or beyond

Engorgement
The breasts look shiny because of the oedema and can be painful.
The milk does not flow well due to increased pressure in the breast.
The breast (s) may be red
The mother may be feverish

Antibiotics for mastitis (and alternative if penicillin allergic)
Flucloxacillin (1g 4x a day)
Clindamycin if penicillin allergic (450mg 3x a day)
What causes breast thrush?
Candida Albicans
however this is pretty rare, consider other causes first!
An agonising pain in both breasts
Pain is felt equally in both breasts
Pain AFTER every feed
Breast thrush
Signs of thrush in the infant
- nappy rash
- oral thrush
- baby pulling off breast while feeding
- baby windy, fretful or difficult to settle
Treatment of superficial breast thrush
Miconazole cream 2% for 1 week
Treatment of deep breast thrush
Fluconazole
300mg loading does and then 150mg daily for at least 10 days
Treatment of thrush in baby
Oral nystatin suspension for 1 week
Treatment of thrush in baby > 4 months
Miconazole oral gel
