Comparative Housing Flashcards
what are the differences between climatic vs. controlled environment
climatic: low stocking density, large cubic air space per animal, not insulated, naturally ventilated, natural daylight, cheaper
controlled: high stocking density, fairly low cubic air space per animal, well insulated, carefully controlled ventilation, expensive to construct, artificially lit
what is the difference between active vs. passive ventilation
active: fans (+/- ducting)
passive: stack effect, cross wind, inlets
what is the stack or pressure effect
lighter warm air rises out of the top of building sucking in cold air from lower down
stack effect is driven by heat generated within the building (by livestock)
what is natural ventilation
wind sets up differences in air pressure around building
what is an inlet
continuous gap between inner wall and outer cladding
air enters via gap between inner wall and outer cladding
what is a well ventilated building (how many air changes)
10-15
what does good housing provide
- suitable temp
- adequate fecal/urinary separation
- adequate O2
- no buildup of noxious gases/pathogens
- appriopraite feeding
- safe and secure environment
