Coagulation Cascade Exam 3 Flashcards
what are platelets
not true cells; irregularly shaped; responsible for clotting
made in bone marrow
what is a normal platelet count
150,000-400,000
what is thrombocytopenia
low platelet count <100,000
person has a high risk for bleeding
describe the platelet function
detect injury –> go to area of injury –> become “sticky” platelets –> activates and changes shape –> aggregate more and stick to one another –> platelet to platelet aderence –> activates clotting
what is a clotting cascade
groups of proteins that when activated form a blood clot
activated by tissue injury or infection
EX. I cut my hand and i hold pressure as im holding pressure the system starts to occur; platelets going to the site of injury
what is hemostasis
clot plugs the damaged vessel and stops bleeding
what is a blood clot
a meshwork of protein strands which stabilize the platelet plug and trap other cells
what are protein strands made up of
fibrin
what is thrombin
responsible for fibrinogen to fibrin
what is anti-thrombin III (AT III)
circulating inhibitor of thrombin (stops the clotting process)
what are anticoagulants
inhibit the action or formation of the clotting factors
-PREVENT clots
what are antiplatelets
prevent platelet plugs from forming by inhibiting platelet aggregation
-best for preventing heart attacks and stroke
