What is a stroke?
A serious life-threatening medical condition caused by blood supply being cut off in brain causing cells to die
The sooner a person receives treatment, the less damage it will cause
What are the symptoms of a stroke?
Slopped face on one side Eye drops on one side Not able to smile Unable to raise both arms Slurred speech Confusion
What are the two types of strokes?
Ischemic and haemorrhagic
What is an ischemic stroke?
Blood clot blocks blood flow - plaque/ fatty deposit build up
What is a haemorrhagic stroke?
Weakened blood vessel bursts and leaks in and around brain - pressure builds up
What are the impacts of a stroke?
Need help around home - OT
Hearing or vision loss
Need living support
Emotional support - loss of confidence - support groups
What are the causes of a stroke?
High blood pressure CHD Stress High fat diet Obsesity Smoking Age
How can stokes be monitored?
Blood tests - check cholesterol and blood sugar levels
Blood pressure - high BP weakens arteries
Brain scans - determine cause, severity and area damaged by stroke
How can stokes be treated?
Medications: alterplase (injections that dissolve blood clots)
Asprin (reduce chance of blood clot forming)
Warfarin (anticoagulant - blood thinning meds)
Beta blockers (treat high BP)
Statins (reduce cholesterol levels)
Surgery: Thrombectomy (remove blood clot)
Surgical stent
Mobility aids + physiotherapy
Feeding tube
