What is insomnia?
Difficulty falling asleep after going to bed or after awakening during the night
What are the two types of insomnia?

What is sleep apnea?
-Cessation of breathing while sleeping
How prevalent is sleep apnea?
-Nearly all people have occasional episodes but does not interfere with sleep.
What is narcolepsy?
Periods of irresistible sleep, attacks of cataplexy, sleep paralysis, and hypnagogic hallucinations.
What are the physiological basis of narcolepsy?
- relatively rare
- caused by a hereditary autoimmune disease
- strongly influenced by unknown environmental factors
- symptoms of narcolepsy treated with drugs (stimulants or antidepressant drugs)
What is REM sleep behaviour disorder?
Neurological disorder where paralysis does not occur during REM sleep (act out dreams)
What is REM sleep behaviour disorder caused by and associated with?
- Neurodegenerative
- Genetic component
- Associated with better-known neurodegenerative disorders
What is REM sleep behaviour disorders usually treated with?
clonazepam
What problems are associated with SWS?
- Bedwetting
- Sleepwalking
- Night terrors
- Sleep-related eating disorder
