Chapter 6: BRAIN REGIONS INVOLVED IN VISUAL PROCESSING Flashcards
How is the LGN organized?
- six layers of neurons
- these six layers are separated into three sets that analyze different types of visual information.
What do the magnocellular layers analyze ?
- two inner layers
- perception of form, movement, depth, small differences in light.
What do the parvocellular layers analyze?
- four outer layer
- perception of colour and fine details
What do the koniocellular sublayers analyze?
- beneath other two types
- short wavelengths cones (blue)
What is the striate cortex?
- First cortical region involved in combining visual information form several sources.
- receives input from LGN
- performs additional processing of info
- composed of 6 layers
In the striate cortex, what do layers II, III and IVB cells project to?
other cortical areas
In the striate cortex, what do layer V cells project to?
superior colliculus and pons.
In the striate cortex, what do layer VI cells project to?
back to the LGN
What is the extrastriate cortex responsible for?
-combining info from the striate cortex to allow an individual to perceive objects and entire visual scenes
How do different regions of the extrastriate cortex pass on the information?
- each region is specialized
- each region receives info from lower region and passes on the info the higher region.
What does the dorsal pathway of the extrastriate cortex process?
- where object is located
- speed and direction of movement
What does the ventral stream of the extrastriate cortex process?
-what an object is and its colours.
