Chapter 6: PERCEPTION OF SPATIAL LOCATION Flashcards
What does our binocular vision allow us to see?
vivid perception of depth through the process of stereopsis.
What is retinal disparity?
The fact that points on objects located at different distances from the observer will fall on slightly different locations on the two retinas; provides the basis fro stereopsis.
Where are disparity-sensitive neurons found?
Found in the dorsal stream.
What are the three cell types that exist in orientation-sensitive neurons?
- simple
- complex
- hypercomplex
What does area V5 of the extrastriate cortex contain?
- neurons that respond to movement
- receives input from striate cortex and superior colliculus
what does area MST do?
- receives info about movement from V5
- helps analyze optic flow
What is the optic flow?
- complex motion of points in the visual field caused by relative movement between the observer and the environment
- provides info about the relative distance of the object from the observer and of the relative direction of movement.
What does bilateral damage to area v5 produce?
-akinetopsia: inability to perceive movement.
