What is the vertical separation in a hold?
1000ft
Who is responsible for the hold?
Approach controller
What altitude should the first aircraft to arrive at the hold be assigned?
The lowest available level
What is the standard holding pattern at an aerodrome?
Right hand turns
What is the standard hold over a non-standard/en-route point?
Right hand turns
How should turns be made in a hold?
AOB of 25 degrees or a rate 1 turn (whichever gives the least bank)
What just pilots do in the hold?
Take into account wind to maintain heading and/or time
When do outbound timings begin?
Over or abeam the fix (whichever is late)
If the hold is based on DME what takes priority, range or timing?
Range
What is the duration of the outbound track?
Below 14000ft = 1 min
Above 14000ft = 1.5mins
(TP takes priority)
What is the speed in the hold below and at 14000ft?
Normal conditions = 230kts (170kts for A and B)
Turbulence conditions = 280kts (170kts for A and B)
What is the joining of holding pattern based on and what is the tolerance?
Magnetic heading (+/- 5 degrees tolerance)
What are the three entry sectors?
- sector 1/parallel entry
- sector 2/offset entry
- sector 3/direct entry
Describe the parallel entry?
Up the inbound track, rate 1 turn back to holding fix and then hold
Describe the offset entry?
Fly over the holding fix, the fly the opposite inbound track offset by 30 degrees then rate 1 turn and join hold
