Chapter 12 Airspace Flashcards
What is an FIR?
Basic unit of airspace where FIS and alerting services are available
What are Airways in terms of airspace?
CTAs (control areas)
What is an ATZ?
Area around an aerodrome
Where does a zone extend from?
Ground to FL
Where does an area extend from
FL to FL
Where is the UIR in relation to an FIR?
Above it
What are Airways known as in the UIR?
Upper air routes
Where is the top of a FIR?
A VFR FL
What is a CTA? (Control area)
The airspace set up to contain IFR flights for which ATC service is required
What are the upper and lower limits of a CTA?
Lower = No less than 700ft (200m) above ground or water Upper = a VFR FL
Describe the dimensions of a CTR?
5nm from airport in the direction which approaches may be made
What classes of airpsace is controlled?
A - E
What classes of airpsace is uncontrolled?
F and G
What is class F airspace?
Advisory airspace
Who must file flight plans in advisory airspace?
All IFR flights
Why aren’t clearances given in advisory airspace?
Because position info may be incomplete
What traffic receive advisory services in advisory airspace?
Only participating IFR traffic
Where can non radio vfr traffic fly according to icao?
E, F and G airspace
When flying vfr in F and G airspace at night what must be done?
Must be in comms with atc whenever required to do so
What is the speed limits in A, B and C IFR?
None
What is the speed limit in class C vfr and the rest of the airspace?
250IAS below 10,000ft
In what airspace is FIS provided?
C - G
In which airspace would a controlled vfr flight receive atc service?
B, C and D
Who sets the RNP for an airway?
The state
What is RNP based on?
A containment value of 95%
What is RNP determined by?
Comms, atc and the provided navigation services
What do ATS routes consist of?
Airways, upper air routes, SIDs, STARs and low level helicopter routes
What does the prefix U mean?
Upper air route
What does the prefix K mean?
Helicopter low level route
What is the max and what must the characters for an ATS route never exceed?
Max 5 but must never exceed 6
