What are the objectives of ATS?

What are the 3 divisions of ATS?
ATC, FIS and alerting service
How is atc subdivided?
Area, approach and aerodrome (the three A’s)
What is ground control part of?
Aerodrome control
In remote areas who is responsible for ATC?
Determined on the basis of regional air navigation agreements
When is ATFM implemented?
When ATC is capacity is exceeded
How accurate are ATSU time pieces?
+/- 30 seconds
What is the purpose of a clearance?
Used for expediting and separating traffic
What does a clearance not relive the pilot from?
- safety of aircraft
- terrain clearance (unless being radar vectored under IFR)
- compliance with rules of the air
- traffic avoidance
What vehicles have priority over all other surface traffic?
Emergency vehicles proceeding to an accident (indicated by flashing blue lights)
What is an AIRMET?
Info concerning the occurance of en route weather which may affect low level aircraft that has not be forecast
Can ATIS be transmitted on a vor frequency?
Yes as long as the identity signal or performance isn’t affected
Can ATIS be transmitted on an ILS frequency?
NO
When is ATIS updated?
Upon any significant change
What happens if an aircraft acknowledges an out of date ATIS?
Current ATIS transmitted to aircraft by atc without delay
Who is entitled to alerting services?
- all ac provided with atc
- all ac that have filed a Fp or known to atc
- any ac subject to unlawful interference
Who are responsible for imitating the alerting service?
FIC and ACC
What else are the FIC and ACC responsible for?
Moving from phase to phase and updating the RCC
When is the uncertainty phase declared?
No comms within 30 mins or aircraft fails to arrive at destination within 30 mins
What is the alert phase?
- When apprehension exists
- no landing within 5 mins of landing clearance
- no comms
- known for subject to unlawful interference
- info has been received that the aircraft is impaired
What is the distress phase?
- further comms unsuccessful
- fuel onboard has been exhausted
- likely forced landing
- has or is about to make a forced landing
What are the atc speed control on final and intermediate approach?
Max of +/- 20kts IAS and not after 4nm before threshold
What is a routine AIREP?
Section 1 = position report
Section 2 = operational report (eta and endurance)
Section 3 = met
(Remember POM)
What do ATIRs relate to?
Airprox
What are the two types of airprox?
- airprox p (pilot)
- airprox c (controller)
How is an airprox p filed?
By radio immediately and report completed on ground
