Chapter 8 Flashcards
Disease
an abnormal condition of all or part of the body or organs making the body incapable of normal function
Infection control
The methods used to eliminate or reduce the transmission of infectious organisms
Congenital
Condition or disease that is present from birth
Pathogens
Disease-producing microorganisms
Direct transmisson
occures when an infected host comes into contact with another subject and the pathogens are transfered to the new host
Fomite
An object or material capable of carrying infection
Indirect transmission
Occures when pathogens from the host is deposited on an object
Common modes of transmission
Ingestion, Inhalation, Direct contact with mucous membranes, skin contact, invitation through broken skin
MIcroorganisms to be concerned about
Bacteria-one-celled MIcroorganisms that have both plant and animal characteristics
ex: Cocci, Bacilli, spirilla
Fungi-A diverse group of organisms that thrive or grow in wet or damp areas
ex: athletes foot, ringworm, candita, and vaginal yeast infection
Viruses- a pariacidic submicroscopic partials that infects and resides in cell of biological organisms
ex: common cold, smallpox, some forms of pneumonia, mums, and measles
Parasites-Grow feed and take shelter on another organism while contributing nothing to the survival of said organism
ex: lice, ticks, fleas, and mites
Nonpathogenic
harmless MIcroorganisms
Pathogenic
capable of producing disease
Antigen
A foreign substance or toxin that initiates and immune response
Scabies
A contagious caused by itch mites
immunity
The ability of the body to destroy and resist infection
antibodies
A class of proteins produced in the body in response to contact with antigens that immunize the body
Decontamination
Removal of blood or other potentially infectious materials and the removal of visible debris or residue ex: dust, hair, skin.
Sterilization
the process that completely destroys all microbial life
clean/cleaning
The process using soap/detergent and water to remove visible debris and other disease causing germs
Disinfection
A chemical processes that destroys most harmful organisms on enviromental surfaces
Allergy
Reaction due to extreme sensitivity to certain foods, chemicals, or other harmless substances
Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Required by law for products to include safety info including hazardous ingredients, safe use procedures, proper disposal, and other precausons
Standard precausion
A system of infection control that protects a person of exposure to blood and other body fluids by considering all clients as Ill or contaminated
Disinfectant container
Dedicated container to hold disinfectant soliution where objects can be completely immersed
Disinfectants
Sodium hypochlorite- (bleach) effective disinfectant in Masage studio, floors and counter tops
Phenolic disinfectant- Powerful tuberculocidal disinfectant
Quaternary ammonium compounds- (Quats) effective disinfectant in spas and massage settings, effective disinfectant for bacteria, Viruses, Fungi, and mold.
safety
An attitude put into practice that is concerned with preventing situations that could lead to injury of the practitioner and/or client
four areas of concern for safety in a massage practice
Equipment, Fire safety, First-aid, heat/ventilation
How long to run hands when wet and applied soap
20 seconds
