Chapter 5 The skin Flashcards
Touch Receptor
Sensory nerve endings in the skin that register basic stimuli
Epidermis
Outermost layer of skin
Layers of epidermis
The Stratum corneum- outermost layer
Stratum lucidum-Very thin cell layer
Stratum granulosum-Mostly dead cells
Stratum spinosum-Melanin protects against solor rays
Stratum germinativum- layer that goes through mitosis
Dermis
Deeper layer of skin
Subcutaneous tissues
Continuation of the dermis; connects the skin with the underlying structure
layers of the dermis
Papillary- increase the surface area of contact between the epidermis and dermis
Reticular layer- Contains the fatty cells, Blood, Lymph vessels, Sweat, Oil glands, Hair follicles, and Nerve endings
Sensory Receptors in the dermis
Free nerve endings- most prevelent and responsible for sense of hot, cold, light touch/pressure; Nociceptors are pain reseptors
Meissner corpscles- Light tough and vibration
Merkel discs- Sensitive to light touch and high concentration
Ruffini corpuscles- Sensitive to deep pressure and tissue distortion
Pacinian corpuscles- Sensitive to vibration and pressure
Sabaceous glands
secrete sebum
Sudoriferous glands
excrete sweat
Allergy
Sensitivity to normally harmless substances
