chapter 5 Lymph Flashcards
Lymphatic system
maintaining fluid balance, supporting the immune system, and transporting nutrients and waste products
Lymph
a collection of the extra fluid that drains from cells and tissues in your body
Lymphatics
small intermediate lymph vessles
Lacteals
Lymphatic capillaries located in the vili of the small intestines
Thoracic duct
Largest lymph vessel that collects lymph from both legs and the left side of the body
Lymphatic duct
smaller lymph vessels that collect lymph from the right side of the head and neck, right upper arm, and right side of the chest
Lymphatic terminus
the area behind the collarbones where lymph fluid returns to the circulatory system
Lymph nodes
made of lymphoid tissue; house large amounts of lymphocytes that seerve to filter, break down, and neutralize harmful bacteria and toxic substances collected in the lymph
brachiocephalic vein
here the lymphatic and venous systems meet, and lymph drains into the venous circulation.
venous circulation
the network of blood vessels that carries deoxygenated blood from the body’s tissues back to the heart
Immune system
Complex array of organs, cells, and molecules that fights off bacteria, viruses, parasites-, and fungi
Lymphocytes
white blood cells that originate in the bone marrow and play an important role in the eimmune system
T-cells
A Specilized lymphocyte that destroy infected cells or regulate the immune response by signaling other cells to attack invaders
Antigen
Anything that can trigger an immune response
B-cells
specialized lymphocyte that produce antibodies to fight pathogens directly
autoimmune disease
occures when the immune system mistakes self for nonself and attacks itself
Allergens
a antigen that can cause an allergic response in some people
Phagocytes
blood cells that are able to engulf and digest cellular debris and foreign bodies in the tissue
Innate immunity
is present from before birth
Acquired immunity
Results from an encounter with a new substance, which triggers events that induce an immune response specific to that particular substance
Vaccine
Contains microorganisms that are either dead, weakened, or altered forms of a live infections organism that stimulates an immue response without causing illness
(HIV) Human immunodeficiency virus
A virus that can multiply and destroys a portion of the immune system
(AIDS) Acquired immune deficiency syndome
A condition caused by HIV infection whereby a portion of the immune system is destroyed, making it easy for the infected person to acquire life threatening diseases
opportunistic infection
caused by organisms commonly found in the environment and our bodies that becomes deadly when the body’s immune system is weakened
