Depend on the blood and lymph to carry their secretions to various affected tissues
Pituitary gland/ master gland
A small gland that secretes hormones that stimulate or regulate other glands
Thyroxin
Stimulates the metabolic rate of the body
Triidothyronine
Stimulates the metabolic rate of the body
Calcitonin
Hormone that controls the amount of calcium in the blood
Cretinism
Caused by lack of thyroxin during fetal development and results in dwarfed stature and intellectual disabilities
Parathormone
Regulates the blood level of calcium
Tetany
Sustained muscle contraction that usually affects the hands and feet
Islets of langerhans
Found in the pancreas and produce insulin and glucagon
Diabetes mellitus
Caused by decreased output of insulin by the pancreas
Cushing’s syndrome
Results from excess glucocorticoid production and is characterized by obesity, muscle weakness, elevated blood sugar, and hypertension

Egg shaped gland that produces spermatozoa
Testosterone
Male hormone responsible for development of secondary sexual characteristics
Estrogen
Female- hormone responsiblefor development of secondary sexual characteristics
Progesterone
Female- hormone that prepares the uterine lining for implantation, aids in maintaining pregnancy, and stimulates development of mammary glands for nursing
Ovaries
Glandular organs in the pelvis that produce the ova and female sex hormones
