Cells and tissues WAW Flashcards
RNA
Carries the genetic code to the ribosomes where proteins are made.
DNA
Building blocks of life inside the nucleus
Neuron
cells that are responsible for receiving, processing, and transmitting electrical and chemical signals throughout the body.
Blast Cells
Germ cells that are responsible for building connective tissue
Organelles
Structures that help regulate function of the cell
Clast Cells
responsible for breaking Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes
Red Blood cells, responsible for transporting oxygen and carbon dioxide
Leukocytes
White blood cells, Defend against pathogens
Thrombocytes
Platelets; clots blood
Mitosis
Cell division; cell splits into two daughter cells; then dividing further into there own cells
Plasma
Fluid portion of the blood
Cells
Functional units of all tissue
Striated skeletal
Connected by bone or other muscle by way of tendons; Volentary movement responsible for movement of the body
Muscular tissue
Contractions causes movement; Skeletal, smooth, and cardiac muscle tissues
Epithelial Tissue
A protective layer on the outside and inside of the body that is responsible for absorption, excretion, secretion, and protection
Nervous Tissue
made up of neurons found in the brain, spinal cord, and associated nerves; receive stimuli, generate and transmit electrical impulses throughout the body
Smooth muscle
connected to hollow organs; Involentary movement controlled by autonomic nervous system/glandular activity to move subsences throughout the body
Cardiac muscles
Found only in the heart; involentary and responsible for pumping blood through the heart
Connective tissue
Binds structures together, provides support and protection, and serves as a framework
serous membrane
Water substance produced to lubricate the close body cavities and the outermost surface of some organs in said cavities
pleural membrane
thin, double-layered sheet of tissue that covers the lungs and lines the inside of the chest cavity
pericardium
a sac-like membrane that surrounds the heart and is made up of two layers
peritoneal
a smooth, transparent tissue that lines the abdominal cavity and pelvis.
