Ch 5 Nervous system 2 Flashcards
241-256
Dermatome
An area of the skin supplied by nerve fibers originating from a single spinal nerve root
Exteroceptors
Record conscious sensations such as heat, cold pain, and pressure in the body
Proprioceptors
Sense where the body is and how it moves
muscle spindle cells
Are sensory organs in muscle that detect the rate of stretch in the muscles
Golgi tendon organs
Are multibranching sensory nerve endings located in tendons
ANS: Sympathetic nervous system
Supplies the glands, involentary muscles of internal organs, and walls of blood vessels with nerves and prepares the body for energy-expending circumstances
ANS: Parasympathetic nervous system
Functions to conserve energy and reserve the action of the sympathetic division
Neurologic pathway
The route that a nerve impulse travels through the nervous system
Multiple sclerosis
Occures in young adults and results from the breakdown of the Myelin sheath
Parkinsons disease
Occurs as a result of the degeneration of certain nerve Tissues that regulate body movement
Quadriplegia
Paralysis of the arms and legs caused by a stroke or spinal cord injury
Paraplegia
Paralysis of the lower Extremities; it does not affect the arms or feet
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
Stroke; caused by blood clot or ruptured blood vessels in or around the brain that subsequently destroys nerve tissue
Hemipegia
Unilateral paralysis caused by stroke
Epilepsy
A nerologica condition in which there is an abnormal electrical activity in the CNS without apparent tissue abnormalilities
Meningitis
An acute inflamation of the pia mater and arachnoid Matter around the brain and spinal cord
