Leader vs Manager
The manager is a day-to-day problem solve, the leader is focused on developing new approaches and future ideas. However, the positions overlap
Trait approach
Leaders are born with the talent and abilities for leadership
How does the trait approach differ from other theories of leadership?
Most approaches propose that leadership can be learned where as trait approach proposes that leaders are born. Leaders should be chosen rather than trained.
Initiating structure vs consideration
Strucutre refers to definings tast for employees and fousing on goals. Consideration is the degree to which the leader shows trust, respect and sensitivity to employees’ feelings. Consideration was more strongly related to follower satisfaction whereas structure was more strongly related to leader job and group performace
The 4 leadership behaviors in PGT (Path-Goal Theory)
(1) Direct leadership
(2) Supportive leadership
(3) Participative leadership
(4) Achievement-oriented leadership
Calculus-Based Trust
Form of trust based upon keeping records of what nother person does for you and what you do for them. Neither party will become vulnerable to the behavior of the other person.
Knowledge-Based Trust
Grounded in how predictable the other person is. Through experience people come to expect the other oerson to come through for them.
Identification-Based Trust
Leader and follower share the same goals and objective.
Transactional leadership
Behaviors that motivate followers through reward and corrective action
Types of transactional leader behaviors (from worst to best)
(1) Nonleadership, avoidance of leadership
(2) Management by exception, looking for errors and then correcting them
(3) Contingent rewards, rewarding based on the performance
Transformational leadership
Behaviors that mobilize extra effort from followers through emphasis on change through articulating a new vision for the organization.
Types of transformational leadership behaviors (4 I’s)
(1) Idealized influence, being admired by followers
(2) Inspirational motivation, inspiring others to work hard
(3) Intellectual stimulation, encourage innovation and new ideas
(4) Individualized consideration, treating each follower as a unique person
