Thin slicing
Being able to determine a person’s characteristics from just a small slice of behavior. For instance, a teacher’s impression of the student will affect grading at the end of the semester.
What are the steps to the communication process?
- The sender - someone chooses a message to send out to others in the company
- Encoding - Transformation of the message into the signal
- The Channel - medium that transmits the message
- Decoding - the receiver decodes the message
- The receiver - person who receives the message
Communication apprehension (CA)
an individual’s level of fear or anxiety with either real or anticipated communication with another person or persons
What are the 2 types of CA?
Trait-based - affects a person’s ability to communicate with others
State-based - triggered by specific situations such as being required to give a speech
What are the components of active listening?
- Demonstrates moderate to high nonverbal involvement
- Reflects the speaker’s message using verbal paraphrasing
- May include asking questions that encourage speakers to elaborate on their experiences
The strenght of weak ties thesis
weak ties help people tap into nonredundant pools of information (for instance hearing about a job opening from your parent’s neighbor)
What parts of communication are attributer to verbal and non verbal communications?

What functions does nonverbal communication serve in organizations?
- Display of personal attributes
- Establishment of dominance and hierarchy
- Promotion of social functioning
- Fostering high-quality relationships
- Display of emotions
Why do employees withhold information?
Employees who have negative emotions and also worry about their job situation are more likely to withhold information.
