Chapter 5.4 Flashcards
Define Cohesion.
Bonding between water molecules.
Define Adhesion.
Bonding between water molecules and other substances.
What is a solvent?
A substance that dissolves solutes.
Define specific heat.
The amount of energy it takes to heat up 1g of a substance by 1 C.
Heat of Vaporization.
The amount if energy it takes for 1g of water to evaporate to become water vapor, hydrogen bonds must be completely broken.
What is concentration?
The amount of a solute per volume.
What is pH?
Potential Hydrogen. measures [H30+] on a logarithmic scale.
pOH?
Potential Hydroxide. -log[OH-]
What is a hydroxide ion?
An ion with a high OH-.
What is a hydronium ion?
An ion with a high H30+].
What is an acid?
Greater pOH than pOH.
What is a base?
When the pOH value is larger than the pH.
What are the five properties of water?
Cohesion and Adhesion.
Water is the solvent of life.
Ice is less dense than liquid water.
High Specific Heat
Heat of Vaporization.
How are the pH values different when the pOH values are 13 and 4?
The pH of the molecule with 4 is much higher than the molecule with the pOH value of 13.
