Chapter 5.1 Flashcards
What is an isotope?
Same elements with different charges.
What are the charges of each particle?
Proton - Positive
Neutron - Neutral
Electron - Negative
What charges attract, and which repel?
Repel - Positive and positive, negative and negative
Attract - Positive and negative, negative and positive.
What is the coulombic attraction?
Force of attract between particles.
Force equation
F = k q1 q2/r2
How is atomic mass determined?
By the number of protons.
When valence electrons are closer to the nucleus, will the attraction be higher or lower?
The attraction would increase.
What if the valence electrons are farther away?
Then the attraction is less.
What is the relationship between coulombic and distance?
The farther away the lesser attraction, and the closer the stronger.
The farther you go down on a periodic table what happens? What about going across?
Down - They gain more electrons, protons, and shells.
Across - More protons are being gained.
