Chapter 5.3 Flashcards
What are the three intermolecular attractions?
London Dispersion, Dipole-Dipole, Hydrogen Bond.
What is London Dispersion(LD)?
Temporary attraction between two molecules. Temporary dipoles are created.
What is Dipole - Dipole?
The larger the partial charges = the stronger the attraction. Opposite ends connect with dipoles forming.
What is a Hydrogen Bond?
The strongest type of attraction. It is formed when two molecules have: O-H, N-H, and F-H bonds.
Rank the attractions from weakest to strongest.
LD, Dipole-Dipole, Hydrogen Bond.
What type of molecules can form LD?
All molecules can.
What can form Hydrogen bonds?
Only polar molecules.
What can form Dipole-Dipole?
Nonpolar and polar.
What bonds are soluble in water?
Only Polar can.
What are soluble in oil?
Only nonpolar.
