Chapter 5.2 Flashcards
What is a nonpolar covalent bond?
Bonding electrons are shared equally between two atoms.
What is the pull for nonpolar bonds?
Equal electronegativity, equal pull.
What is a polar covalent bond?
Bonding electrons shared unequally between two atoms.
What is the pull of a polar bond?
Left - lower eg, weaker pull
Right - higher eg, stronger pull
What is an ionic bond?
Transfer of electrons , become ions, opposites attract.
What is its pull?
Opposites attract, alike will repel.
What do ionic bonds do that covalent don’t?
Form crystals.
What does electronegativity measure?
How strongly atoms attract new bonding electrons to themselves.
What are ionic bonds?
Nonmetal and metal.
Covalent bonds?
Two nonmetals.
