Chapter 4 (prenatal development) Flashcards
what is prenatal development
the development of a being before it is born
what are the three germ layers of an embryo and what is gastriculation
ectoderm (outmost)
endoderm
medoderm
they are the foundation of organ formation
gastriculation is the formation of these layers
what happenes at about 15 weeks in development of a phoetus
there is a bit of lull in activity. the neural circuits are reset and now controlled by higher brain centers
After what time does a foetus show a capacity of learning
after 24 weeks. It now reponds to enviroment and show basic form of memory
What is the first system to function in a foetus and when
The system of touch at about 8 weeks
What is the vestibular system
it is the sensory system that contributes to balance and spatial orientation
What is te chemosensory system
it is the gustatory (taste) and the olfactory (smell) sense
when is the foetus most active (hours of day)
when the mother is moving a lot, causing a lot of vestibular activity, the baby is not very active. It gets more active as the mothers is doing less
What is transnatal learning
Learning that occurs during the prenatal period
What is special about newborns and language
Newborn babies prefer the native language compared to non native language
what do alcohol and cigarettes affect
They affect a bunch of bad stuff, but mostly the plancenta which is crucial for good development of a foetus
what is developmental programming
The hypothesis, that prenatal conditions have effects on heatlth way into adulthood
what is high foetal activity correlated with after they are born
high fussyness and inconsistent behaviour like crying
is a more nature or nuture seen in prenatal development
Most pocesses result from a complex interaction between genes and enviroment (both)
What is neurolation
the formation of the neural plate, neural groove an neural tube from the ectoderm
