what is phonemic awareness
its being aware that a word consists of different phonemes
5 year olds cannot say what sand would sound without s
it is why learning to read is so difficult for children

it is not being able to read properly

What kinds of languages are there
- Alphabetic script (english): letters correspond to phonemes
- Morphemes (chinese): Letter means morpheme
- Syllabary (japanese): letters mean moras

Units of speech larger than syllables but larger than phonemes
–> onset and rimes
what predicts how good a child will develop reading
their understanding and sensitivity with rhymes
what are conditional spelling rules
when a letter is one sound in a word but a different one in another word (hop/hope) (hopping/hoping)
what is invented spelling
when children dont know and pay no attention to conditional spelling rules
what is split diagram
understanding that in the english language the e at the end of a sentence is silent
what are morphemic structures
the structures of morphemes, which are parts of a word that make it up. (Unpacked=Un, pack, ed)
They have different and difficult spelling rules
