Was the Jeffersonian republicanism a small of big gov? & why?
Small government. Afraid of big government because people wouldn’t have enough say. We have a big gov today bc the population has increased

Jeffersons theory of government which held that a simple government best suited the needs of the people

Case in which the Supreme Court ruled that it had the power to abolish legislative acts by declaring them unconstitutional
Judicial review
Supreme courts power to declare an act of Congress unconstitutional
What does judicial review lead to ?
Checks and balances (prevent any branch from becoming too powerful -us constitution)
How many judges are in the Supreme Court and why is it important?
9 judges, it rules over all other courts and exams/determines other courts
What does the Supreme Court do all day?
Sit and refer to the constitution. Never a trial but there are lawyers for both sides. (School speech)
What was the Louisiana purchase ?
Napoleon(French leader) offered Louisiana territory to Jefferson for 15 million . He did this so Napoleon could pay for war debts (fought Britain) it doubled the size of the US
What was Napoleon like?
Nasty, mean, and really short. He had a big ego and was the French leader
Who explored the Louisiana territory and brought back info about the west?

What was the reason for the was of 1812?
Impressment - practice of seizing Americans at sea and drafting them into the British navy
Monroe doctrine
Policy of the US opposition to any European interference in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. President Monroe announced this. “Get off my lawn.”
What were the 3 main points in the American system ?
Establish a protective tariff
Rechartering national bank
Development of transportation systems and other internal improvements in order to make travel throughout the nation easier
Who developed the American system and who promoted the plan? What was the point of it?
President Madison developed it. Henry clay (house speaker in congress) promoted it. Point was the make sure the states were not fighting against each other or competing. Wanted to stay together and get the max amount of money for products
What was the Missouri compromise?
Series of agreements passed by congress in 1820 to maintain the balance of power between free states and slave states
