Chapter 29.4 Flashcards
What four things do echinoderms share?
Internal skeleton, 5-part radial symmetry, water-vascular system, can breathe through skin
What is the endoskeleton of echinoderms made of?
Ossicles- individual plates
What do echinoderms lack?
Head + brain
Where do echinoderms sense?
The skin
What is a madreporite?
A pore where water can enter a starfish
What is the water-vascular system made of?
A system of interconnected canals with thousands of tiny, hollow tube feet
What is a ampulla?
One of many structures that control tune feet with water pressure
What are tube feet?
Tiny legs that are used to move, grip surfaces, or manipulate objects
Where do particles and respiratory gasses move through?
The coelom
What are skin gills?
Small, fingerlike projections that grow among the echinoderm’s spines
What is the purpose of skin gills?
They increase surface area through which respiratory gasses can be exchanged
How do starfish feed?
They expel the first of their two stomachs, excrete digestive enzymes, then suck up the food and their stomach back into their body
What is the spiny skinned phylum?
Echinodermata
