Chapter 29.1, 29.2 Flashcards
What is an appendage?
A structure that extends from the arthropod’s body wall
What are the three regions of an arthropod from the front?
Head, thorax, abdomen
What is is called when the first two sections are fused?
Cephalothorax
What is an exoskeleton and what is it made of?
A rigid outer layer, composed of chitin
What is a trachea?
One of a network of fine tubes that an arthropod breathes through
What kind of circulatory system do arthropods have?
Open
What are Malpighian tubules?
Structures used for excretion
What kind of eye do most arthropods have and what is it good at?
Compound- movement
How do most arthropods reproduce?
Sexually
Where does most arthropods reproduction take place?
Internally
What is molting?
The process of periodically shedding an exoskeleton so that a larger body can be grown
Name the four subphylum of arthropods and give an example of each.
Hexapoda-insects
Myriapoda- millipedes (centipedes)
Crustacea- lobster (shrimp)
Chelicerata- spider (scorpion, mite, tick, horseshoe crab)
What are the three main reasons arthropods are so successful?
Exoskeleton allows them to adapt to life on land, they are small, they are adapted to a wide variety of food and habitats
Name the five main members of the subphylum chelicerata.
Spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks, horseshoe crabs
What are the three characteristics of arthropods?
Segmented body, jointed appendages, hard external skeleton
