What are choanocytes?
Collar cells- they beat their flagella to draw in water
What are ostia?
Tiny holes in a sponge where water enters
What is the spongocel?
The body cavity of a sponge
What is the osculum?
A large hole where water exits
What are amoebocytes?
Irregularly shaped cells that move around the body wall supplying the rest of the sponges cells with nutrients and carry away waste as well as aid in the production of spicules
What are spicules?
Needles of silica or calcium carbonate that form the skeleton of some sponges
What does hermaphrodites mean?
Produce both eggs and sperm
Name the three ways sponges can reproduce
Sexually-(gemmules, they are hermaphrodites)
Asexually-(budding and shedding)
What is a gemmule?
The zygote of sponges that is a free-swimming larvae
If you cut up a sponge, would it grow back?
Yes, sponges can regenerate
