Chapter 2-Respiratory System-Soft Tissues Flashcards
Soft Tissues of the Thorax and Respiratory Passageway
oral and nasal cavities, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
Trachea
Flexible tube.
Composed of 16-20 hyaline cartilage rings on the anterior portion of the trachea.
Lined with ciliated epithelial mucous membrane
Mucous glands secrete mucous to moisten incoming air and move particles out the trachea via its cilia.
Esophagus is posterior the trachea.
pg 23
(Trachea): Trachealis muscle
located along posterior wall for flexibility
pg 23
(Trachea): Carina Trachea
point at which the trachea divides into bronchi
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Mainstem bronchi
Right bronchus and Left bronchus
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Secondary Bronchi
Extend into the lobes of the lungs
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Tertiary Bronchi
Smaller passageways extending into the bronchioles
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Bronchioles
Terminal bronchioles or terminal bronchioli
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Alveolar Ducts
Passageways into the alveoli
pg 23
(Bronchial Tree): Alveoli
Depressions in alveolar sacs where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide in a network of capillaries
pg 23
Lungs
Healthy lungs are soft, spongy, porous, elastic and pink
pg 24
Lungs, Structures
Apex,
Right lung -3 lobes,
Left lung -2 lobes
pg 24
(Lungs, Structures): Mediastinum
Space that separates the 2 lungs.
Heart, large vessels, esophagus, some nerves, and part of the branching bronchi.
pg 24
(Lungs, Structures): Mediastinal surface
Surface of each lung facing the mediastinum
pg 24
(Lungs, Structures): Costal surface
Convex surface of lung next to ribs
pg 24
Lungs, Structures
Oblique fissures
travel in superolateral direction divide lungs into lobes
pg 24
(Lungs, Structures): Transverse fissure
(right lung only)
pg 24
(Lungs, Structures): Pleurae
Covering for the lungs and internal organs
pg 24
Visceral pleurae
(covering lungs)
pg 24
Parietal pleurae
(covering thoracic linings)
pg 24
(Parietal pleurae): Mediastinal pleura
(covering mediastinum)
pg 24
(Parietal pleurae): Diaphragmatic pleura
(covering diaphragm)
pg 24
Parietal pleurae): Costal pleurae
(covering inner surface of rib cage)
pg 24
Pleural Linkage
Two layers of the pleurae adhere to each other and are airtight.
Allows expansion during breathing.
Mucous solution is released between the parietal and visceral pleurae. Which reduces surface tension, provides a slippery interface between the lungs and thoracic wall, and keeps the sheets from clinging to each other.
