Chapter 2 Flashcards
Tight Junctions
Prevent fluids and most molecules from moving between cells
Desmosomes
anchor cells together
“desmos” = link, connection
Gap junctions
Trans-membrane proteins that allow small molecules to pass from cell to cell
Lysosomes
contain digestive enzymes that digest indigested bacteria, viruses, toxins, and such
Cytoskeleton
include; microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules
Peripheral proteins
- function as enzymes, motor proteins, and cell to cell links
- loosely attached to integral proteins
Voltage gated channels
open and close in response to changes in the membrane potential
What must be present for diffusion to occur?
a concentration gradient
Which part of the cell serves to process, package, and export proteins?
Golgi Apparatus
During which period can a second action potential be initiated by a larger than normal stimulus?
Relative Refactory Period
An increase in cell membrane potential towards a more negative value is known as what?
hyperpolarization
